Rule Proposal
Baseball Robot Umpire Strike Zone
May 29, 2026
Automated ball-strike technology (ABS) is already being tested in the minor leagues and has proven highly accurate. This proposal would implement ABS at the MLB level for all regular season and postseason games.
The system uses high-speed cameras and tracking software to determine if the ball passes through the rulebook strike zone. Calls are communicated to the home plate umpire via earpiece, who then signals the call.
This eliminates umpire inconsistency while maintaining the human element of the game.
