This proposed rule change would allow top-seeded playoff teams to choose their opponents instead of being locked into a fixed bracket based strictly on seed. In formats with byes, teams could first decide whether to accept a bye or play in the opening round. This system lets teams decide for themselves what counts as the best path, whether that means avoiding a hot opponent, reducing travel, or choosing a team they believe they match up well against. The idea could also make playoff selection more exciting for fans. A televised playoff draft would create instant storylines, because lower-seeded teams would know exactly who chose them.
