Expand The College Football Playoff From 12 Teams To 32

August 21, 2026
This fan-submitted proposal would create a much larger postseason field, making it far less likely that an undefeated team would be left out of the national championship race. Supporters could also point to the additional playoff inventory and television revenue. But the plan would likely require cutting a regular-season game, and I see that as a major tradeoff. Another concern is scheduling 16 first-round games, weakening the bowl system, increasing travel costs for fans, and asking some teams to potentially survive a five-game playoff run. It's also questionable whether the expansion would really solve the controversy it’s meant to fix. The debate over who gets left out would simply move to the teams around No. 33, while early-round mismatches, player opt-outs, and less compelling later matchups could create new problems. I ultimately give the 32-team playoff a -6 on the Sports Rule Pod Good Idea Scale, though I do see some potentially interesting tweaks, including eliminating conference championship games or letting top seeds choose their playoff opponents.
