Four-Point Field Goal

April 17, 2026
This proposed football rule would award four points for any field goal made from more than 60 yards. The idea has already been implemented in the United Football League, creating a new scoring tier for extremely long kicks. Instead of every made field goal being worth three points, teams would receive an extra point for converting from very long range. Why Create This Rule The intended purpose is to reward exceptional kicking and add a new strategic possibility late in drives or late in games. A team that stalls near midfield could still have a chance to score four points if it has a kicker with enough range. In theory, this could create more excitement around long field goal attempts and give teams another way to come back or change the score quickly. The concern is that this rule may reward the wrong thing. Instead of encouraging teams to keep pushing toward the end zone, it could make them more willing to settle for long kicks, stall drives intentionally, or even lose yardage to create a four-point attempt. That works against the recent shift in football toward more aggressive fourth-down decision-making. While the rule is an interesting experiment, it may make field goals too important and reward teams for failing to advance the ball farther down the field.
