MLB All-Star Monday Skills Showcase
May 01, 2026
This proposed innovation would expand MLB All-Star Monday beyond the Home Run Derby by adding new skills competitions earlier in the day. The event could include a bunting derby, where players aim for targets on the field, along with competitions focused on fielding, throwing, and baserunning. These events would give fans a broader look at the athleticism and specialized skills that make great baseball players stand out.
Why Create This Rule
The goal is to make All-Star Monday a fuller celebration of baseball, not just power hitting. The Home Run Derby is already a major event, but baseball includes many other skills that fans rarely get to see showcased in a fun, competitive format. A skills competition could introduce fans to more players, draw interest from more team fan bases, and give MLB another way to turn All-Star Week into a true league-wide spectacle.
The proposal also includes a possible change to the Home Run Derby itself: determining the winner by total home run distance instead of total home runs. While that would reward the massive shots fans love to see, it could be harder to follow in real time because fans react most naturally when they can instantly understand the score. A stronger version of the idea may be to keep the traditional Home Run Derby format while adding skills competitions and using home run distance as a tiebreaker or bonus element.
