Should The PGA Implement a Promotion-And-Relegation Model For Professional Golf?
October 30, 2026
The episode’s sports innovation is a promotion-and-relegation model for professional golf, which Nick describes as approved for PGA Tour implementation in 2028. Under the structure he outlines, players compete in a top-level Championship Series and a lower-tier Challenger Series, with performance determining who moves up or down. Most movement occurs between seasons, while additional “Last Chance” events give players opportunities to retain or earn top-tier status. The goal is to make more tournaments consequential by putting both advancement and continued membership at stake.
Nick gives the concept a positive 8 on his −10 to +10 Good Idea Scale. He believes it could encourage consistent participation, reward both steady performance and tournament victories, and generate interest near the bottom of the standings as well as the top. His main concerns are how injured players will be treated and whether the Challenger Series will receive adequate coverage and support. He also sees the ability to adjust the system over time as a strength, emphasizing that it doesn’t have to be perfect immediately to improve the sport.
